A popular section of The West Highland Way is the stretch from Balmaha to Rowardennan. Of course you don’t have to be on the Glasgow to Fort William journey to be able to enjoy this wonderful part of the walk.
This walk makes an ideal day’s adventure, starting and ending at The Oak Tree Inn. Before heading off make sure that you stock up on all that you will need for the day from our Village Shop in Balmaha, this could include a picnic to enjoy at Rowardennan.
The distance from Balmaha to Rowarennan is just over 7 miles and walking it will take you around three hours. Leave the Oak Tree, through the village, following the West Highland Way markers. The route takes you mostly along the loch side and for all but a small distance avoids the road.
In the distance you will see Ben Lomond, towering over the Loch that takes its name and your walk will take you through woodland and along beaches, giving you wonderful views of the loch and its islands. You may be lucky and see some Highland Cows, birds and other wildlife.
The walk is easy to moderate with the occasional incline. There has been a lot of work undertaken recently to improve the walkways and you will no doubt meet other walkers using this popular pathway.
If you were to set off just after 9am from Balmaha you’d be arriving at Rowardennan for lunchtime and a well-earned rest before turning back. Rowardennan contains Ben Lomond Memorial Park, owned and run by the National Trust for Scotland. The return journey will retrace your steps and provide you with some different views of the beautiful landscapes.
When you arrive back in Balmaha, you’ll be getting ready for some good food, come and enjoy dinner at The Oak Tree Inn and do let us know how you got on through our Facebook and Twitter accounts.
